Where Are Diamonds Mined?

The largest single producer of diamonds by volume is the Argye mine which is located in the Kimberly region of Western Australia in the far north eastern region. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto and although it does produce more diamonds than any other mine, it is by no means the richest. This is because the quality of the diamonds mined at Argye are not of a very high quality. The mine at Argye is also the single biggest producer of pink diamonds and is responsible for roughly 90% of all pink diamonds on the market today. Rio Tinto also owns another big diamond mine in Canada, north of Yellowknife and is extremely large. This mine is known as Diavik and churns out more than 8 million carats worth of diamonds every year.

Another big diamond producing company is owned by BH Billiton and is called Ekati. It is located to the south of the Arctic Circle in Canada and it was the first diamond mine ever opened in Canada. Diamonds mined from Ekati are sold under the name of Aurias and the average carat size of a diamond mined here is 1.24 carats. This mine is very important to the economy of Canada and is one of the largest employers in the area.

The largest diamond mine in the world is known as Orapa and is located in Botswana just west of Francistown. The mine is fully operational seven days a week and has set up many schools for the children of its employees. A very large part of its community would be lost without it. It also has its own hospital facility and produces some of the best diamonds available to be cut into diamond rings and diamond necklaces.
