What happens with the engagement ring during the wedding ceremony?

It is traditional for the wedding ring to be presented to the bride, and subsequently worn on the third finger of the left hand. There are many reasons for this which have been discussed in previous articles, however it is thought that this finger is the nearest to the heart and as a result the symbolism is exemplified. One question which is often asked however, is what happens with the engagement ring during the ceremony itself?

Sometimes, the bride decides not to remove her engagement ring during the wedding ceremony itself and this can give rise to a few problems as a result.

Other females decide to temporarily reposition the ring on to the left hand until the ceremony has been conducted, and then move it back on to the left hand afterwards.

The other option is to keep the engagement ring on the traditional finger during the marriage and subtly change the order of the rings immediately following the wedding.

In addition to this, there are still a significant number of brides who prefer to wear gloves as part of their outfit. These can be seen as very stylish and fitting for the occasion, however there are numerous issues which they need to address as a result of this. Firstly, it is imperative that the engagement ring is not worn over the top of this as they could easily slide off and become lost – this is also applicable for the wedding ring.

Secondly, if the bride’s rings are being worn under the glove, then it is important that the fitting of the garment is relatively loose. This will ensure that the ring does not rub on the surface of the glove which could rip it, or cause scuffing on the ring itself.

It is possible to purchase custom made gloves especially designed for wedding ceremonies. These have a positioned slit within the material which will allow the ring to be accommodated safely.

Finally, once the ceremony has been conducted, it is best practice to remove the gloves to enable family and friends to have a closer look at both the wedding ring and the engagement ring.
