The origins of diamond cutting
by Rob ~ April 7th, 2008. Filed under: Diamond Cutting. It is unsure as to when the first attempt of diamond cutting was made. Research has indicated that the origins of diamond cutting styles came from India. Yet, this is believed to have been restricted to merely the chipping and grinding of diamonds.
During the ancient era, diamonds were commonly sold as a result of the mythical and magical properties they were assumed to have possessed. If a diamond’s original condition was modified in any way, this would alter the magical properties of it and cause it to become worthless.
To get a flat face on a diamond, a slicing procedure was developed. Early diamond cutting styles are thought to stem from Europe. It is also known that European travelers used to visit the continent of Asia (mainly India), to import the riches of diamonds back to Europe. These generally came from the Golconda Mine and were transported essentially for cutting purposes.
Once cut, the diamonds were efficiently exported back to their origins in India, and usually became a part of the King’s, Maharaja’s and Moghul’s assets. Many of these diamonds were converted into diamond rings and diamond necklaces which acted as a powerful and lasting reminder of status levels within the country.
