The 4 “C”s - Cut
by Rob ~ April 12th, 2008. Filed under: Diamond Cutting. The diamond’s cut is essentially what gives it a human touch whilst also representing a critical factor in the beauty and value of the stone.
There are a multitude of different ways which a diamond can be cut and if conducted properly, this can further illuminate the colour of the stone, as well as conceal sight imperfections, such as inclusions.
The method used to cut the diamond also determines the level of light which is reflected from diamond and back to the human eye. Should the stone be cut too deeply (which is called “Nailhead”) or not cut deeply enough (“Fish Eye”), then it is possible that light will escape from the diamond through the pavilion. It is therefore obvious that if the stone is not cut properly, then this will affect the dispersion rate which it commands – this is an imperative feature of any diamond.
The actual term “cut” refers to a multitude of different factors which comprise the total geometry of the stone. These include table size, facet arrangement and girdle thickness. The relationship between these factors as well as the eclectic range of diamond shapes which affect the cut of the diamond.
This is one of the imperative issues which you need to clarify before investing in your diamond ring or diamond necklace.
