The ‘True Weight’ of Diamonds
by Michelle ~ March 4th, 2009. Filed under: Diamond Cutting.Diamonds which are sold as one carat diamonds are usually not actually one carat at all, if they have been cut in the right way. Diamonds come in many different forms and various shapes and sizes. Many diamonds are actually of a higher weight than thought. This is because many jewellers are not cutting diamonds in the correct way. This incorrect cutting can make the diamond appear less attractive and may even make it sparkle less if the workmanship is really poor. The best way to get your diamond sparkling is to make sure that there is no extra weight left when cutting the diamond. If this is done correctly, the diamond will look perfect and sparkle brilliantly in the sunlight.
The problem of overweight diamonds began in the 1950s when it was public perception that the bigger the diamond the better. Cutters would modify their style and produce less than perfect cuts in order to bulk up the weight of the diamond. It is estimated that roughly 75 percent of all diamonds are over the weight that they should be and this is concerning, as quality will suffer as a result. When buying diamond rings or diamond earrings, you should always check that the weight and cut are as accurate as possible.
