Dropping your ring down the sink is more common than you would think!
by Rob ~ May 29th, 2008. Filed under: General. No matter what sort of ring which you wear on a day to day basis, on of the most common accidents which we hear about is that it slipped off and fell down the sink. You would actually be very surprised how common this is, although for the beholder it proves to be a traumatic time and one which is filled with guilt and panic.
The reason why this is so common is when skin is submerged under water, it contracts, and therefore the ring becomes looser. Lighter rings could therefore slip off without the owner even noticing that it has actually happend!
Depending on the size of the body of water you drop the ring in, this determines whether or not the recovery process will be successful. For example, if you drop it swimming in an ocean the odds are vastly reduced compared to if you drop it paddling in a childs swimming pool!
The best way to avoid this is obviously to remove the ring before any water activites which may prove to be a danger. For things like the bath and kitchen sink then for added security then you may want to cover the drains with a mesh filter which would allow water through it but block solid materials.
Should the worse come to the worst however, then firstly close the water valves and resist draining any further liquid through the system. Then take out the u bend pipes and search for the ring in the lowest section. Should this not return your ring safely, then we would advise that you contact a plumber as a matter of urgency.
Above all try not to panic as this may cloud your judgement even though you will understandably feel much tension.
